Forbidden Fruit

This is a prime specimen of durian. Never heard of it before? Me neither, until I had lunch with four Singaporians and they started talking about this mysterious fruit in a fascinatingly enthusiastic way. For instance, how did their different families consume it - on old newspapers? At home, or in parks? Which countries produce the best ones (apparently NOT Thailand), and what is the best time of year to go hunting for good ones? The most captivating aspect of this verbal orgy of fruit love was that everyone in Singapore seems to share the appetite for durian, despite the fact that it stinks (which is why it is forbidden in airports!). For this reason, the opera house is - unless someone was trying to fool me - actually shaped as the fruit!

Ee Loong, if you're reading this, you know what you have to bring me when you come back in September...
